Wiz Khalifa was the latest guest to appear on Sneaker Shopping with Complex’s Joe La Puma. Together, they hit up Stadium Goods in New York City. During their chat, the Pittsburgh native talked about his love for Chuck Taylors, new work-out regimen and much more.
On Currensy putting him onto Jordans:I didn’t have a lot of money for cool shoes during high school. I didn’t know I was copping heat at the time. He came through and was like, “Bro, you got heat.” Then I seen his closet when I went down there, and it was sick. Just shoes everywhere. This was before they were bringing the retros back. He had shoes I had only seen in the ’90s. It was shoes that I had only seen my cousin with. He was bringing them back and they were looking good. He put me up on game and showed me how to rock everything.
On his son’s sneakers:For my son it’s crazy. Like I said, I didn’t have crazy shoes growing up. For him, now he’s got access to everything. Anytime I cop, I cop him something. He gravitates towards Nikes. I think his friends at school wear a lot of Nikes. He’s like, “Yo, daddy, I got to wear these. I don’t want to wear blah blah blah. I want to wear this.” Whatever his friends at school are into, he’s into. Basically how it is in real life.
On how he got into Chuck Taylors:I don’t remember exactly what age I was, but I remember my mom telling me I could go school shopping. I had $80 for shoes. The Air Forces costed $85. I could either get the Air Forces or two pairs of Chucks for $40 a piece. I was like, “Bam, that’s it.” I got the blue ones, and I got the black ones.
On his recent weight gain:Gaining weight affected my closet. Not really the way I dress, but my clothes, I had to get rid of everything and start over. Some of my shirts were mediums, I can only wear a large/x-large now. Pants definitely went up because my legs got bigger. I dress more comfortably now, because it has to feel good. I’m in the gym five days a week. I’m not really trying to have tight, gripping clothes. But my suits fit better.
