T.I.’s acting chops are well-known by now, with appearances in ATL, American Gangster, Takers and more over the years, not to mention having his own reality show T.I. And Tiny: The Family Hustle and his role as executive producer on the new series Sisterhood Of Hip-Hop. But the A-Town MC has a few new movie roles in the pipeline, with the first, the upcoming comedy Get Hard starring Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell, opening this Friday nationwide. The film follows Will Ferrell’s attempt to learn how to get tougher as he prepares for a stint in jail for tax evasion, enlisting both Hart and T.I. as his guides to achieving his goal.
“I play a gentleman named Russell,” Tip explained about his role. “I play Kevin Hart’s character’s cousin. My character is… Let’s just say, they have reason to believe if ever Will [Ferrell]‘s character had found himself in prison that I would be able to supply adequate protection.”
Both Hart and Ferrell have had extended superstar runs in the comedy field over the past decade-plus, putting them on a premier level in terms of comedy talent. T.I. in particular had some kind words for the duo’s chops on the set.
“Man, I think they’re probably the best comedy duo probably since, man, Eddie Murphy, Dan Aykroyd, Richard Pryor, Gene Wilder, you know what I’m sayin’? They up there,” Tip said. “They feed off each other very well and they both some kick-ass clowns.”
Check out the rest of our interview above as Tip tells a behind-the-scenes story of making the film and compares and contrasts the different skill sets that go into both making music and acting. “Well, for me, making music is kind of like playing couples tennis,” the Grand Hustle chief said. “Where acting is like playing football, you know, soccer. It’s a bigger team.”
Get Hard hits theaters on Friday. Check out that film and be prepared for Tip’s next role in the upcoming superhero film Ant-Man, due out later this year, as well as the highly-anticipated ATL 2.
