 Spotify

Spotify is doing big things in 2017. According to the folks at Billboard, the music streaming giant is expanding its New York City headquarters, moving to the 4 World Trade Center in lower Manhattan while also doubling its workforce.

In a press release, New York Governor Andrew Cuomo claimed that Spotify’s expansion in the Big Apple will also save 832 of the company’s current jobs. Horacio Gutierrez, who serves as Spotify’s general counsel, says Spotify considered a few other places to expand, but ultimately decided they were best served continuing to operate in New York.

“We will bring more diversity and a whole lot of music to the area,” he explained to reporters.”I hope that Spotify’s expansion send a message to the tech community that NYC is open for business.”

According to Gutierrez, Spotify most of the new jobs Spotify is adding–which are said to number over 1,000–on will be in the fields of marketing and engineering. Spotify’s decision to expand their headquarters in New York has already drawn a good bit of praise.

“Today’s Spotify announcement is music to our ears. It ups the cool factor in Lower Manhattan and boosts the neighborhood’s cultural cred,” said Jessica Lappin, president of Downtown Alliance, which is a group said to be one of the city’s biggest business improvement organizations.

She continued, “It’s also big news as it means leasing at 4 WTC is now complete. Along with the concentration of media firms already here, and the forthcoming Performing Arts Center, Spotify’s move is going to jump-start the growth of a vibrant local entertainment scene in Lower Manhattan.”

Spotify did some big things in 2016, but from the sounds of this report, they’ll be doing even more of those in 2017 and beyond.
