“Smile on my face but it’s really no joke,” Yasiin Bey rapped on his 2009 cut “Auditorium.” But joking’s exactly what it is, or rather what it’s about to be, when the MC takes the stage Tuesday night in Montreal for his first-ever stand-up comedy performance. Yes, you read that right: the mighty Mos Def is about to hit you with some punch lines.
Yasiin will be taking the stage at Montreal’s Phi Centre, where he’ll perform, for the first time ever (allegedly) as a proper comedian. Canadian-born beatmaker Kaytranada is being credited as the one to blow the whistle on Bey’s new gig after he published a Facebook post with a black and white image of the MC and a comment detailing what’s to come:
WORLD PREMIERE!!!!; YASIIN BEY STAND UP COMEDY DEBUT TONIGHT AT THE PHI CENTRE FEATURING ME ON THE 1S AND 2S. TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE
Given that Yasiin has been such a longtime friend and collaborator with Dave Chappelle and other comedic greats, there’s quite a lot of hope for his prospects as a standalone comic. Color us intrigued, to say the least. If you’re fortunate enough to be in the Montreal area, tickets for the event are still on sale here.
